About the Plan

This plan contains the cut list, materials list, plywood cut map, detailed steps, instructions and 3D drawings to build this DIY storage desk with 9 drawers.

The overall dimensions are 72″ wide, 22″ deep, and 30 1/2″ tall. The plans detail how to build the desk as shown, but the molding is cut to fit. This allows the option to customize your molding choices and your furniture feet as well.

The majority of the desk is made from 3/4″ PureBond cabinet grade plywood, with 1×3 and 1×2 trim details. The front is trimmed out as well as the sides so this desk is perfect for putting up against a wall or placing in the middle of a room. It’s gorgeous from all sides.

Recommended tools to build this include miter saw, circular saw, drill, pocket hole jig, nail gun, and pocket hole jig. A table saw or router is recommended as well if you wish to add dadoes in your drawers for the drawer bottoms. Otherwise, you can glue and nail or staple the bottoms in place.

Good detailed plans, Mediocre cut list

I purchased the plans last night and hoping to build the desk within the next couple weeks. I recently discovered that Lowe’s near me carries some nice birch plywood. Not as nice as Baltic Birch, but also half the price. I fell in love with how simple the build process is, so wanted to build the desk. Most of the plans are extremely detailed, but the cut list diagrams leave much to be desired, hence only 4 stars. The diagrams that show how to layout the pieces on a 4×8 sheet of plywood look like they were drawn in MS paint and do not account for the kerf of the blade. There are 22in pieces next to 26in pieces. Even with a thin kerf blade and perfect edges, you will be left with the pieces being off by at least 1/32 off, which could result in variety of issues. Please do yourself a favor and use one of many online calculators/optimizers to lay out your cuts. They allow you to specify the stock size, blade kerf and a few other options. The best part, they will ensure the best possible layout for the stock size. I specified 1inch kerf to account for any imperfections, but you can probably get away with 1/2 inch kerf. The second issue is that the cut list for the drawer boxes does not have a diagram. It just says to use plywood scraps/leftovers. I have a couple scraps of plywood laying around my shop, but I try not to keep bunch of plywood for making 9 complete drawer boxes. Maybe it’s just me, but as a beginner woodworker, the last thing you want is for your shop to be overflowing with scraps. I know this may be high expectations for $12 plans, but I would much rather compromise on the build instructions to have a solid cut list with proper diagrams. After all, the first step of any build is to properly cut and label all your pieces.

The cost will mostly depend on the cost and grade of plywood you use. I’m the DC metropolitan area and cabinet grade birch plywood from a big box store is about $85/sheet for a sheet of 3/4 and about $45/sheet for a sheet of 1/4. If you go with softwood plywood, you can generally cut you cost in half. If you opt in for baltic birch from a hardwood supplier, you can expect to pay twice as much. I decided to go with the first option and expect to pay about $300 plus the cost of hardware (another $100 or so). Depending on the area where you live, you can expect to pay as little as $200 or as much as $500-$600 to build this. It will be more expensively than an IKEA desk, but definitely sturdier and not made out of paper.

trying to build one for a friend, and can not give him an estimate, without knowing how much wood I will need to purchase. the finishes and hardware cost I can get without any issues.
